ENT Problems

Something every parent encounters but no one enjoys are those pesky ears, nose, and throat (ENT) issues. ENT issues can significantly affect children's mood, learning and development, making it challenging for your little one to thrive. At our practice, Dr Prishani Ramsunder can diagnose, treat and manage ENT concerns before they become serious.

What are ENT Problems?

Ears, nose, and throat problems are those little (or big) annoyances affecting the upper respiratory system and hearing. These are often our kids' first battles, from the common cold to ear infections.

Breaking down the ears, nose and throat

Ears

  • Ear Infections: Your child might tug at their ears, be fussy, or have trouble sleeping.
  • Swimmer's Ear: This is an infection in the outer ear that typically occurs after swimming.

Causes: Viruses, bacteria, or even just water trapped in the ear.

Nose

  • Common Cold: Runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and a mild fever.
  • Allergic Rhinitis: Symptoms similar to a cold but often seasonal or triggered by allergens.

Causes: Viruses, bacteria, and allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander.

Throat

  • Sore Throat: This could be due to viruses or bacteria (like strep throat).
  • Tonsilitis: Inflammation of the tonsils, often accompanied by a sore throat.

Causes: Culprits are usually viruses and bacteria.

What are the treatments and management options?

Ears

  • Antibiotics: If a bacterial infection is confirmed, antibiotics can help.
  • Pain Relief: Over-the-counter medication or warm compresses can alleviate pain.
  • Ear Drops: These are quite effective for swimmer's ears.

Nose

  • Decongestants: These can ease symptoms but should be used cautiously and under guidance.
  • Nasal Irrigation: Saline solution can clear the nasal passages.
  • Antihistamines: For allergic rhinitis, these can be extremely helpful.

Throat

  • Lozenges and Warm Liquids: These are best friends for a sore throat.
  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics are prescribed for a bacterial infection, like strep throat.
  • Tonsillectomy: In severe, recurring cases of tonsillitis, surgical removal of the tonsils might be considered.

It's essential to consult healthcare professionals for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your child's needs if you notice them experiencing any symptoms of ENT problems.
